research interests

In a nutshell, I am interested in consciousness as it relates to social cognition.  Social cognition refers to the way in which we perceive, understand, and make sense of ourselves and others in our social world.  My research examines both extremes of the consciousness continuum, if you will.  At the "nonconscious" end, I am interested in how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the environment in ways that are outside of our conscious awareness.  At the "conscious" end, I am interested in how mindfulness - the awareness of one's present moment with acceptance and nonjudgment - affects our daily functioning in the social world.  Current research interests include the following:

  • Effects of nonconscious processes on mood, cognition, judgment, and behavior

  • Nonconscious behavioral mimicry

  • Mindfulness and the implicit/explicit relation

  • Mindfulness and self-regulation

  • Effects of loving-kindness meditation
