DC-Area American Politics Workshop

June 21, 2011
10am to 3:30pm
Sponsored by the
Department of Government and the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies
American University

PROGRAM

We have four papers on the schedule for our inaugural meeting. We’ll discuss two in the morning and two in the afternoon. They can be downloaded using the links below.

In order to maximize discussion, the presenters will not provide detailed presentations. Instead, they will offer brief introductory comments, and then we will open the floor to questions. Participants are expected to have read the papers before the workshop so that virtually all of the time can be devoted to discussion. We will allocate about one hour to each.

Beginning at 10am, refreshments (coffee, tea, muffins, fruit, etc.) will be available. We’ll start the workshop promptly at 10:30am, break for a catered lunch around 12:30pm, and begin the afternoon session at 1:30pm. We should wrap up around 3:30pm.

Morning session

10:30am: Jennifer L. Lawless (American) and Richard L. Fox (Loyola Marymount): "Barefoot and Pregnant, or Ready to be President? Gender, Family Roles, and Political Ambition in the 21st Century"

11:30am: James G. Gimpel (Maryland), Wendy K. Tam Cho (Illinois), and Iris Hui (UCLA):
"Voter Migration and the Geographic Sorting of the American Electorate"

Afternoon session

1:30pm: Michael A. Bailey (Georgetown), Jon Mummolo (Georgetown), and Hans Noel (Georgetown): "The Tea Party and Congressional Representation: Tracking the Influence of Activists, Groups, and Elites"

2:30pm: Hans Noel (Georgetown) "Interpreting Ideal Points with Help from the Ideological Discourse, or Why Everything You Know about NOMINATE Scores Is Wrong"

Note: This document contains two components of Hans’ book manuscript, The Coalition Merchants. The first part (“Appendix to Chapter 4”) provides background on the data and statistical models relevant to the substantive discussion in the second part of the document (“Chapter 5”).

DIRECTIONS

The workshop will be held on the AU campus (4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC, 20016) in the Ward Circle Building. We’ll convene in Room 3, on the building’s bottom level. Ward is located, coincidentally enough, near Ward Circle, at the intersection of Massachusetts and Nebraska Ave. Here’s a map: http://tinyurl.com/3bm44s6

For drivers:

Parking is available across the street in the Nebraska Ave. surface lot. Entrances are on both Nebraska and New Mexico Ave. (though the Nebraska entrance is accessible only to northbound traffic). If you’re driving, email Danny Hayes (dhayes@american.edu) for a parking permit. This will allow you to park in the lot for free. Otherwise, the daily rate is $12.

For Metro-ers:

Take the Red Line to the Tenleytown-AU stop. Exit on the east side of Wisconsin Ave.

Shuttles to campus run every 10 minutes from the corner of 40th St. and Albermarle St., which is straight ahead as you emerge from the Metro escalator. Board the Blue Route (Main Campus) bus. The shuttle will head down Nebraska Avenue, past several embassies and homes. Get off at Ward, the stop immediately after going through Ward Circle. The ride will take about five minutes.
